What’s Happening

A moving scam almost always starts with a non-binding quote – a number given over the phone or online, without anyone seeing your home, that bears no legal obligation to stay the same on move day. When the truck arrives and the price has doubled, you are not dealing with a mistake. You are dealing with a business model.

Call (855) 890-3455

Here is how the trap works. A mover gives you a low estimate sight-unseen to win your booking. Your belongings get loaded. Then, on the ramp or at the destination, the price goes up – sometimes dramatically – and the crew won’t unload until you pay. This practice is sometimes called a “hostage load,” and it is far more common than most people realize. The difference between a company that does this and one that doesn’t comes down to one thing: whether your quote is binding and whether it was based on a real survey of your home. If neither of those things happened, you are exposed.

Why It Happens

The phone quote was never meant to be the final price

A quote given over the phone, from a website form, or based on a rough bedroom count is an estimate in name only. The mover has not seen your furniture, your stairs, your long hallway, or the piano in the den. When they do see it – on move day, with your things already staged at the door – every surprise becomes a line item. The quote was a door-opener, not a commitment. You can spot this in advance: if no one asked to walk through your home or see it on video before quoting you, the number is not binding.

The “low-ball and hold” business model

Some moving operations are built specifically around quoting below market to win the booking, then recapturing margin once the truck is loaded. Federal regulations require interstate movers to release your goods at the original estimate plus ten percent – but that rule only applies to non-binding estimates, and only if you know to invoke it. Many customers don’t. If a quote seems unusually low compared to other written estimates you’ve received, that gap is worth examining before anything gets packed.

Broker handoffs with no accountability

Some companies that answer your call are not movers – they are brokers who sell your move to a third party, sometimes on the same day. The crew that shows up may have no connection to the company whose name was on the website. Their insurance, their training, and their interest in your belongings are all unknowns. The tell is usually in the paperwork: if the company name on your contract differs from the name on the truck, someone handed your move off. That is the moment accountability disappears.

Vague or missing paperwork

A legitimate moving company gives you a written order for service, a bill of lading, and a copy of the binding estimate before anything moves. If you were handed a paper you didn’t fully read, or if no paperwork was offered at all, the move-day price is essentially whatever the crew decides to charge. Before any mover touches a box, you should have a document in hand that states the total price, what it covers, and what happens if something goes wrong. If that document doesn’t exist, the move hasn’t started on solid ground.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop and read everything you signed. Pull out every document the moving company gave you – the estimate, the order for service, the bill of lading. Look for the words “binding” or “not-to-exceed.” If you don’t see them, or if you don’t have any paperwork at all, you need to address that before the truck is loaded.
  • Do not hand over payment in full before delivery. A legitimate mover does not require full payment before your things are off the truck. If a crew is asking for cash or full card payment at pickup, that is a warning sign worth acting on immediately.
  • Photograph your belongings before loading. Take clear photos of furniture, electronics, and anything fragile before any mover carries it out. Date and time stamps help. This is basic documentation that protects you if a damage claim comes up later.
  • Verify the company’s operating authority. Interstate movers are required to be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. A quick search by company name or DOT number takes about two minutes and tells you whether the mover is legally authorized to operate. If they can’t give you a DOT number, that is an answer in itself.
  • Call a second mover for a real in-person or video survey before anything is decided. If you have not yet committed, or if you are mid-booking and something feels off, the fastest protection is a binding written estimate from a company that has actually seen your home. That survey is free – the binding number that comes out of it is worth considerably more than free.

How We Fix It

At Milestone Moving Co., the process is designed to make this entire category of problem impossible before it starts. When you call (855) 890-3455, we schedule an in-person or video survey of your home – a real walkthrough, not a bedroom count over the phone. A trained Milestone team member goes through every room, notes the furniture, the access points, the stairs, the items that need specialty handling. From that survey comes a binding written estimate. The number on that document is the number you pay. It does not change on move day, on the ramp, or at delivery – that is the Written Price Promise, and it is backed by the Move-Right Guarantee.

On move day, a background-checked, uniformed Milestone crew – people on our own payroll, not gig labor sourced from a text message – arrives with a truck stocked with pads, shrink wrap, floor runners, and dollies. The same crew that loads your home is the crew that delivers it. And for 90 days after delivery, if anything we moved or packed isn’t right, one call to our live 24/7 support line brings a Milestone crew or a Milestone check. Not a subcontractor. Not a claim form that disappears. This is what Long Distance Moving and Local Moving look like when the accountability doesn’t end at the curb.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 4.8 from 10+ reviews

"Upright piano on the second floor and a staircase that turns twice on the way down. Four of them came with a piano board and straps, pulled the railing off first, and had it on the truck without a mark on the wall. Two other companies had told me they would not attempt it."

- Kristen Walsh

"The move itself was quick and nothing was broken. They did arrive right at the back end of the arrival window, which pushed the unload into the evening and cost me the freight elevator slot at the other building. Dispatch called ahead to warn me, so at least I was not sitting there guessing."

- Rami Mansour

"Careful crew and a fair price for a long day. One box got labeled for the wrong room and I spent an evening hunting for the kitchen things, which had gone into a bedroom closet. Small thing across a hundred boxes, and worth knowing they label as they load."
