How Does Moving Insurance and Valuation Work?

Moving insurance and valuation are not the same thing, and the difference matters a great deal when something gets damaged. Valuation is the mover’s liability coverage under federal law – it comes in two tiers, and the one automatically applied to your shipment pays almost nothing. Understanding which tier covers your move, and what a mover is actually promising to make right, is the most important piece of paperwork in your entire move.

Most people don’t ask about this until something breaks. That’s understandable – there’s a lot to manage when you’re moving. But the protection level on your shipment is locked in before the truck rolls, not after. Knowing what you’re signing means you won’t be reading the fine print in the parking lot of a claims office, wondering how a damaged piano became a $0.30-per-pound math problem.

What’s Happening

When you book a mover and sign the contract without specifying otherwise, your shipment is almost certainly covered under Released Value Protection – the federal minimum. At $0.60 per pound per article, a 50-pound television damaged in transit is worth about $30 in a claim, regardless of what it cost you. That’s not a moving insurance policy. That’s a liability floor that exists to protect the carrier, not the customer.

The term “moving insurance” is actually a misnomer that the industry uses loosely. Movers don’t sell insurance – they offer valuation, which is a declaration of how much liability they accept for your goods. True moving insurance, if you want it, is sold by a third-party insurer and is a separate purchase entirely. Most customers never hear this distinction explained before they sign. Here’s what the two standard valuation options actually mean, and what full-value protection looks like when it comes from the mover directly.

Why It Happens

Released Value Protection Is the Default – and Almost No One Knows It

Federal regulations require movers to offer two levels of valuation, but the law also allows the carrier to default to the cheaper one unless you actively choose otherwise. So if you signed a contract without discussing valuation, you’re almost certainly at $0.60 per pound. The mover isn’t hiding this – it’s in the paperwork – but it’s buried, and few carriers walk customers through it at booking.

The Word “Insurance” Is Used Loosely Across the Industry

When a moving company says your goods are “covered” or “insured,” they usually mean the carrier’s valuation coverage, not an actual insurance policy underwritten by an insurer. Real moving insurance – replacement cost coverage, contents protection – is purchased separately, typically through a third-party provider. A customer who doesn’t ask specifically which one they have almost always has the cheaper valuation, not a policy.

Full-Value Protection Means Something Specific – Ask for the Definition in Writing

Full-value protection, when offered by the mover, means the carrier is liable to repair, replace, or pay the current market value for any item lost or damaged during the move. That’s meaningfully better than released value, but the exact terms vary by company – some attach deductibles, some exclude certain item categories, some cap the payout. If a mover offers full-value protection, you want the definition and any exclusions in writing before the job starts, not verbally on the phone.

Items You Pack Yourself Are Usually Treated Differently

Most valuation agreements include a “packed by owner” exclusion – if you packed the box and the mover didn’t damage the box itself, the carrier often has no liability for what’s inside. This catches a lot of customers off guard. If a fragile item breaks and the box looks fine on the outside, you may have no recourse at all under a standard valuation agreement unless the mover handled the packing.

What to Do Right Now

  • Pull out your moving contract and find the valuation section. It will name either “released value” or “full-value protection.” If you’re not sure which applies, call your mover directly and ask them to confirm in writing before the truck arrives.
  • Make a written inventory of high-value items before anything is loaded. Photographs with timestamps, original receipts where you have them, and serial numbers for electronics. This documentation is what makes a claim provable – without it, disputes almost always resolve in the carrier’s favor.
  • If you are packing any boxes yourself, label them clearly and understand that most valuation agreements treat the contents as your responsibility. If something inside those boxes matters to you, consider having the professional crew pack it instead, or at minimum document what went in.
  • Ask for the mover’s claims process in writing before move day. Specifically: who handles claims, what’s the filing window, and what’s the resolution path. A company that answers these questions plainly before the move is a different kind of company than one that hands you a form number after something goes wrong.
  • If you want third-party insurance coverage above what the mover offers, purchase it before the truck arrives. You cannot add it retroactively. Many homeowners’ or renters’ policies cover items in transit – check yours now, while there’s still time to fill the gap.

How We Fix It

At Milestone, valuation isn’t a conversation we have after something goes wrong. It’s part of the survey – in person or on video – before we quote the job. When a Milestone crew chief walks your home, they’re noting high-value items, flagging anything that needs specialty handling, and making sure the protection level on your shipment matches what you actually own.

Everything Milestone packs rides under full-value protection as part of the Move-Right Guarantee. That’s not a checkbox – it means if anything we moved or packed isn’t right at delivery, one call to our claims desk brings a Milestone crew or a Milestone check within 90 days. Not a subcontractor. Not a form that disappears into a queue. Our name is on the truck, so the outcome is on us.

The written estimate we give you after the survey covers the protection terms in plain language. The number doesn’t change on move day. The protection doesn’t either. Your local Milestone Moving Co. team handles everything from the survey through delivery under one binding written agreement – and we answer the phone 24 hours a day if a question comes up at any point along the way.

This applies to our Long Distance Moving and Local Moving services equally – and if you need full professional packing to make sure your items qualify for full-value protection, our Packing Services team handles that as part of the same job.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 4.8 from 10+ reviews

"The estimate said binding and I spent the week waiting for the line about stairs or weight that would let them move it. Move day came, the truck went out loaded, and the number on the paperwork I signed was the number I paid. Nothing added for the long carry."

- Ryan Delaney

"Wardrobe boxes and dish barrels were in the quote rather than sold to me as extras on the day. They hung both closets straight into the boxes on arrival and every plate came out of the barrel whole at the other end."

- Sofia Torres

"Did the estimate over a video call and walked him through every room on my phone, including the garage and the shed I had forgotten about. The truck he sent was the right size and the final invoice landed within a few dollars of what he said on that call."
