Change-of-Address Checklist for Chicago Movers
Updating your address after a move in Chicago takes about 4-6 hours of focused work spread across two weeks, and missing even one step can mean missed paychecks, frozen bank cards, or a gap in health coverage. Start the week before your move date, not after the truck pulls away. If you’d rather not manage this alone, call us at (855) 890-3455 and we’ll walk you through it while we handle your binding estimate.
We’ve been moving families out of Hollywood since 2006, and the calls we get three weeks after delivery are rarely about the furniture. They’re about the W-2 that went to the old apartment, the prescription that got returned to sender, or the utility bill that followed them to collections. Here’s the checklist we give our own crews’ families when they relocate.
Start With the USPS (Do This First)
The United States Postal Service forwards mail for 12 months for first-class and 6 months for periodicals, but that forwarding clock starts the day you submit, not the day you move. Submit your change of address online at usps.com or in person at your local Chicago post office. The online fee is $1.10; in-person is free. Bring a government-issued ID.
Here’s where people trip up: forwarding does not notify the sender of your new address. It only redirects what arrives. Your bank, your employer, your insurance company - they keep mailing to the old address until you tell them directly. We’ve seen this cost people in Hollywood real money when a tax document or court notice never caught up.
- Submit USPS change of address 7-10 days before move date
- Set start date to your actual move day, not earlier (mail piles up)
- Choose “Individual” if only you are moving; “Family” if everyone at the address relocates together
- Save the confirmation number - you’ll need it if forwarding fails
- Update directly with senders you care about; don’t rely on forwarding alone
After 12 months, USPS stops forwarding entirely. Mark your calendar for month 11 to finish updating any stragglers.
Government & Legal Documents
Illinois requires you to update your driver’s license address within 10 days of moving. The Secretary of State’s office handles this; you can start online but must visit a facility for the physical card. Chicago has locations in the Loop, on Elston Avenue, and in suburban facilities if city lines are easier. Bring proof of new residency - a lease, utility bill, or bank statement dated within 90 days.
Vehicle registration follows the same 10-day rule. Update at the same Secretary of State visit to avoid a second trip. If you’re moving from out of state into Chicago, you’ll need an Illinois emissions test first, then title and registration within 30 days.
Voter registration updates automatically in Illinois when you update your driver’s license, but verify at the Chicago Board of Elections website. Ward and precinct boundaries shift; your polling place may change even within the same neighborhood.
- Driver’s license: 10 days, Secretary of State
- Vehicle registration: same 10-day window
- Voter registration: verify separately; check new polling location
- Passport: file DS-5504 or DS-82 depending on timing; no fee if within one year of issuance
We’ve moved Chicago families who forgot the passport update and nearly missed international travel. The State Department does not forward passports - they return to sender if the address is wrong.
Financial Accounts & Insurance
Every bank, credit card, investment account, and loan servicer needs your new address. Do this within the first week; fraud departments flag address mismatches and can freeze accounts without warning. We’ve had a crew member in Hollywood locked out of his debit card on move day because he updated the bank after the USPS forward kicked in, and the systems flagged the mismatch.
Update in this order: primary checking account, credit cards, investment accounts, then any auto-pay loans or mortgages. Each update triggers a confirmation letter to both old and new addresses - that’s normal, not fraud.
Insurance follows its own timeline. Auto policies must match your garaging address; Chicago ZIP codes can shift premiums significantly. Home or renter’s insurance needs the new address effective your move-in date, with no gap in coverage. Health insurance, life insurance, and any disability policies all need updates to send Explanation of Benefits documents and premium notices to the right place.
- Banks and credit cards: within 7 days
- Auto insurance: before move day; rate may change
- Home/renter’s insurance: effective move-in date, no gap
- Health, dental, vision insurance: update for EOB delivery
- IRS: Form 8822 if mid-year; otherwise new address on next tax return
If you’re receiving unemployment, Social Security, or VA benefits, update through the respective agency portals. These do not auto-update with USPS forwarding.
Utilities, Subscriptions & Services
Chicago utilities have specific transfer procedures. ComEd (electric) and Peoples Gas require 3-5 business days notice for service transfers. Schedule the old address disconnect for the day after your move, not the day of - you need lights and elevator access until the truck is empty. Schedule the new address connect for the day before you arrive, or the morning of at latest. Winter moves in Chicago mean you do not want to discover the heat isn’t on at 6 PM with a house full of boxes.
Internet and cable vary by provider. Xfinity, AT&T, and RCN all serve different Chicago neighborhoods with different infrastructure. Check availability at your new address before you schedule disconnect; we’ve seen families assume their provider followed them and learn the building only permits one competitor.
- Electric/Gas: ComEd and Peoples Gas, 3-5 days notice
- Water: City of Chicago Department of Water Management; often landlord-handled in rentals
- Internet/Cable: verify new address availability first
- Trash/Recycling: Chicago handles this municipally; no action needed unless moving to a suburb
- Security system: ADT, SimpliSafe, and others require technician visit for hardwired systems
Subscriptions are where the leaks hide. Meal kits, wine clubs, pet supplies, razor deliveries - they don’t bounce back visibly. Go through 12 months of bank statements and identify every recurring shipment. Update or pause each one.

Employment, Schools & Medical Providers
Your employer’s payroll and HR systems need the new address for W-2 delivery, which is legally required by January 31. Update both the payroll system and any benefits portals separately - they often don’t sync. If you have a 401(k) through a separate administrator, that’s a third update.
Chicago Public Schools and most private schools require proof of residency for enrollment and bus routing. Update even if you’re not changing schools; emergency contact mailings and report cards still ship. If you’re moving between districts, request transcript transfers 4-6 weeks before the semester change.
Medical providers are frequently overlooked. Every doctor, dentist, specialist, and pharmacy has your address on file for billing and for sending follow-up instructions. If you use a pharmacy chain like CVS or Walgreens, your prescription history transfers between locations, but your home address in their system determines where refill reminders and insurance correspondence go. If you’re moving out of a hospital system’s service area - say, from Northwestern Medicine territory to Rush - request your records directly rather than assuming digital transfer.
- Employer payroll and HR: immediate
- Benefits administrator (401k, HSA): separate update
- Schools: proof of residency required
- Medical providers: all of them, including pharmacy
- Veterinarian: for prescription mail-order and reminder postcards
When to Call a Pro
If your move involves coordinating address changes across two states, multiple employers, or a household with more than four members, the checklist multiplies quickly. We’ve helped Chicago families who started the process and stalled at the insurance updates, or who updated the bank but forgot the investment account. A missed 1099 in January costs more than our estimate ever would.

The Bottom Line
A complete change-of-address update takes 15-20 separate notifications across government, financial, utility, medical, and personal accounts. Start with USPS 10 days out, finish with the subscriptions most people forget, and keep a running list of what you’ve updated. The families we’ve moved who keep a simple spreadsheet miss nothing; the ones who trust memory alone call us six months later asking if we remember their old utility company’s name.
Our binding written quote covers your move, not your paperwork, but we’ll send you this checklist formatted for printing when you book. If you’re in Hollywood and need help with the move itself, Milestone Moving Co. offers free in-home and video estimates - call (855) 890-3455. The price we quote is the price you pay, and we’ll still be picking up the phone 90 days after delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Start 2 weeks before your move date, with USPS forwarding submitted 7-10 days out. Government documents and utilities need the most lead time; subscriptions and personal accounts can finish in the first week at your new address. Call (855) 890-3455 if you want us to handle the move while you handle the paperwork.
No. USPS forwarding is temporary redirection only; it does not notify senders of your new address. Banks, employers, insurance companies, and government agencies will keep mailing to your old address until you contact them directly. Forwarding expires after 12 months for first-class mail and 6 months for magazines.
You risk a traffic citation if stopped, and your license may not match your insurance records, which can complicate claims. More practically, any legal notice or court summons mailed to your old address is still considered properly served under Illinois law. Update promptly at any Secretary of State facility.
Auto insurance rates often change based on your new ZIP code’s claims history, parking situation, and crime statistics. Home or renter’s insurance shifts with building age, construction type, and proximity to fire stations. Request quotes from your current insurer before moving so you’re not surprised by the new premium.
Download 12 months of bank and credit card statements and highlight every recurring charge. Cross-reference with your email for annual renewals you might not see monthly. Update each service individually; do not rely on USPS forwarding for anything that bills automatically or ships physically.
